Ibania Prieto Syria HIV/AIDS Pandemic in the World Health Organization
It is important for our committee to address the Pandemic HIV/AIDS Pandemic in order to seek a solution to stop the spread. In our country of Syria the HIV/AIDS pandemic remains a forbidden topic of discussion. Although we have not done much to prevent the spreading, it is not a priority of ours to increase prevention.
We refuse to believe we have a problem. It has definitely become a taboo issue in out country because we strongly support celibacy. The frequency of HIV/AIDS in Syria is low. However higher-risk groups such as sex workers or drug takers are not being reached.
The Ministry of Health, which runs the country’s National AIDS Program, hopes to promote prevention by offering test for common sexually transmitted diseases because data shows a low use of prevention. The Professional Centre for Diagnosing Infectious Diseases has been assisting with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Ministry of Health to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS. With the availability of free, voluntary, and confidential test, we hope to decrease the number of people infecting in Syria.
To address the problem we believe it’s important to educate everyone of the issue. Also equally important is to offer free, confidential test and assistance for anyone who has been infected. We would like to the international community to address the issue to better the world we all live in.
